This is a hard one. Please read carefully.

I've been searching for REALISTIC info on the health risks of smoking one cigarette a day for one year. The only answer I seem to get is that its "impossible" to smoke just one a day, which is not the answer I'm looking for. I'm also not a 14 year old who's about to start smoking so please refrain from telling me not to smoke- I'm fully aware of how bad it is. (I'll make a deal with you- you can berate me for smoking only if you are able to answer my actual question of one cig a day).... so, anyone know?

  1. Well, it would probably mean that when you died it would be as the result of a heart attack, a stroke or cancer (which are the most common causes of death for smokers).

If you weren't to smoke the one cigarette per day then, on the other hand, you would most likely die of a heart attack, a stroke or cancer (which are the most common causes of death for non-smokers).

  2. The risks are trivial if you're healthy and not yet of heart attack age. Nor is it impossible to do -- in fact I saw a post a couple of days ago by a woman who did just that, smoked one cigarette in the evening. She'd cut down and was wondering if she could get away with that from a health perspective -- if you do a search you should be able to find her post.

Edit -- Here's the question, I just found it

  3. My Father, before he even got out of bed in the early morning hours, would lay there and smoke one cigarette every day for as long as I can remember. There is no health risks for one cigarette or four ten cigarettes. It is not impossible to smoke one cigarette, I know that for a fact. You like my Father have that control to do so. Most people do not. I admired him for that and even though I do not know you, I admire you also. You are a person who is in control. Most people let things control them, where they should be the one controlling whatever. I smoke and I can go for hours without a cigarette, or I can smoke two in a few minutes apart. I smoke roughly 10 to 12 cigarettes a day, and part of them burn up in the ashtray. I also control my smoking. The Bible says, do everything in moderation, in other words, don't over indulge. Ten cigarettes a day is no worse than ten beers,(Cirrhosis) ten donuts,(Obese) etc, the cigarettes being the least worse. So go for it young lady and have a good life, which I know you will because you are in control.

  4. I applaud your self control in being able to only smoke one cigarette a day. However, even smoking only one cigarette a day has its drawbacks or risks in the area of long term lung damage from the buildup of nicotine in the lungs even if only one a day. Also there's the danger of association if you are around other people who smoke where the danger of second hand smoke plays a part. However, I must say that even though smoking is dangerous to your health, smoking only one cigarette a day should limit the amount of damage to your lungs depending on how long you continue to smoke. The long term effects can be devastating to your lungs after a certain long period of time. Good luck....

  5. Smoking one cigarette a day will make no significant difference to your health. Being exposed to air pollution is worse. Smoke and don't worry about it.

In the old days, when you filled out a health questionnaire, the question would be phrased "Are you a nonsmoker (<10 cigarettes per day)?"
