Healthcare workers, is your workplace haunted?

Question

I work in a hospital and have worked in other healthcare institutuions. Tonight some co-workers and I were discussing things we've witnessed (apparations, objects in rooms rearranging, sounds, doors opening and closing ...)

Tonight both a patient and a hospital staff person reported seeing a "large black man in a hospital gown" standing in different doorways. No such patient is on that floor tonight.

Last week I saw a lady with long, dark hair wearing a hospital gown who was looking into the hallway ... half her body was through a closed door. Another place I worked I often saw a figure pass by a window leading to the front door; when I would go to open the door, there would be no one there.

What are your experiences?

I have worked in health care for 13 years and have seen a few instances of "Ghosts". Some people pass away and hang around for a while doing the same things they did while alive. I have always noticed that they move on soon. I have never "seen " a ghost but I have heard door alarms, seen things move, or lights flickering.

I work in a military hospital at thee 8th floor(the last one) maternal infant unit, night after night we can hear noises of a hammer coming from the ceiling, like we have workers up there, we sent in the security to check the roof on multiple occasions, but they couldn't find the source of the noise, though they were able to hear it. Usually, the sound can be heard over a specific rooms, and when it starts , we have to move the patients out since they were unable to get any sleep. Also, our floor is well known for toilets taking it upon themselves to flush for hours in a row, despite the efforts the the staff, and stop without any intervention. Everything happens at night, ever since I changed to day shift, everything is just OK.

I have worked in a variety of hospitals for the last 20 years and most of them if not all have had stories of ghosts or spirits generally just moving about, their description changes, but most of the time they are " caught out of the corner of my eye" meaning you thought you saw something.  When you investigated it you were left with more questions than answers.  It is funny or rather odd I should say, but probably 90% of the time when someone will "see" something, sometime during that shift ,often within an hour or two a patient will pass away. maybe they are actually the spirit of an individual whose body is to weak  to keep the spirit in?

I don't believe so.  You have to ask yourself why only some people see these apparitions.  I would wager that the people who "see" things that are paranormal are highly suggestable in general.  That is they are more easily hypnotized or convinced that they recall something that actually did not happen (something planted).  It may be interesting to review Elizabeth Loftus work on memory and suggestion.  It shows how acceptable we are to a story.

I work in a nursing home for elderly (aka "Old Folks Home") and I have never seen anything. Seeing ghosts can be psychological, although I do sorta' believe you, ghosts can't be impossible.

I recently spent 6 weeks in a hospital and experienced a man peering into my room in the middle of the night on two occasions. He was wearing a hospital gown. On the second night, the staff confronted him and took him back to his room on another floor. He was just wandering around. Please join us in the 21st century.Hauntings pretty much lost graces in the 1890's.

I think that's fantastic!

I've found that in most healthcare establishments such as hospitals, there's far too much going on at any one time for people to really take notice of any paranormal activity. It's definitely there; I've been in closed-down hospitals and they are very unusual places to be, but you only really take notice when there's not nurses and doctors running back and forth and all the busy work and this and that going on.

I have worked in a number of facilities over the years.  I have heard a few people tell stories from time to time, but I have never experienced anything, myself.

I also work in a hospital. the back wall of our office is on the other side of the back wall of the morgue. There are cold spots that we feel in the office, and we sit in a row on one side and on our backs we feel this cold draft taht goes down the line, enough to raise the hair on our arms. One night, my coworker just against the wall, left her computer off, I was the last to leave. When I shut down her computer and went to get up off her chair, i noticed that there were 2 reflections in the monitor, one was mine, the other, there was no one behind me to cause it. On another occasion, we had a calculator with the tape at the one end, well it started to work on its on, adding on numbers to the tape, and the scary part was, it was unplugged! We put it in a file cabinet drawer, and we had to throw it out, because it kept doing it. the same number too.

hi there hearing voices and being not able to move my body but only movement of my eyes. seen shadows  I sleep with the light on. it only happens when I go to bed at night the voices are not to my understanding I'm not crazy either for my 13 year old sees ghost but she sleeps with the light off but with the door open. where we live was a soldiers complex for the vets 50 years ago.  anything can happened  god bless peace be with you.  The ghost can not harm you just think positive when you see such images say hi or tell them to move on to the next world bring your bible to work and read it and pray.      I know it's hard but  what can you do or you can call someone that deals with the Paranormal maybe it's someone that die  and is looking for the way out the spirit world.

I am not a healthcare worker but I work in a facility for juvenile offenders in  MO.  I had an experience one night will working the midnight to eight am shift.  I entered a dormitory with eleven residents asleep in their beds.  While talking to the two staff on duty in that dormitory we saw one youth floating above his bed.  It gives me goose bumps to type this story up. This young man was fully clothed and appeared asleep.  I haven't told very many people this story and neither have my co-workers.

I have had patients with out of body experiences. Noises in empty rooms, and a few times people being paged over the intercom by no one.

I've been in health care 4 .... I don't know how long! Yes! It is more possible than not that you've seen someone , or something. I've come across quite a few in my years. Just say, " Hey, what's up?" See what happens.

I don't actually work in the healthcare field, but I have heard a lot of stories from reputable people that are similar to yours.

From what I understand, a primary cause of paranormal activity in healthcare institutions is because of the high level of emotions in those places. For example, there are many people who are afraid of doctors, or of surgery etc. They are also usually sick or in pain, and that also increases their emotions. And then of course there is emotions being emitted by their family -worry over whether or not the person will get better, what if they die etc.

The high amount of emotions attracts entities that feed off of people's emotions. These entities tend to 'stick around' the space, and sometimes look similar to the ghost of a patient.

Also, there is the fact that a lot of people actually die in hospitals. So perhaps their spirit hasn't moved on yet?

I find the whole thing quite fascinating. It will be interesting to see what other contributor's have to say.
