I am in need of fresh ideas. My husband and I will be on a train w/our 3 kids- 9 and under -for most of 2 days. I know we'll have access to junk on the train. I'm tired of the apples, carrots pretzel, pbj, cereal bar thang. Any sugg. for healthy less sugar and fun food option for kids/ I also want lunch-y ideas non perishable as to avoid train pizza. We could take a cooler but the smaller the better. We are pretty much all grazers so it need not be full on sandw. but at least filling calories..thanks in advance !

  1. Okay clearly you're familiar with Amtrak's short trains, the ones that serve microwave pizza.

On the overnight trains, they also have a real Dining Car serving actual, good food.  Quality and prices are comparable to Applebee's or Chili's, except that for sleeping car patrons it is FREE.  You will find reasonable food there, salads, veggies, baked potatoes, even steak.  The dining car is not equipped with a microwave, nor a deep fryer.  It's cooked old style often with regional recipes only found on certain trains.

  2. trail mix. kudos bars. chicken salad.  quesadillas.  chips and dip. popcorn, fudge brownies, fruit salad, taco salad (save the chips til youre ready to eat, otherwise they would just get mushy)

  3. PRETZELS.
