  1. I worked on a cattle property near charleville for a few years, and in my experience i found that the cattle, in winter time, wont seek shelter, in the form of trees because they like to be in the sun to stay warm, but then again it is more so the smaller propertys that are loosing stock to the cold weather, most large propertys or stations have plenty of coverage,

  2. Good question! I think it cost them to much. Just my opinion.

  3. Unfortunately, domesticated animals have lost the ability to look after themselves in bad weather.  Some ranchers in the western US put a bison in with their cattle and they follow the bison.  When it starts snowing, the bison goes to the highest area so it doesn't get snowed in.  Many sheep die because they huddle behind rock walls then get covered with snow.  I would imagine if they had a goat in with them, the goat would lead them to shelter.

  4. Hi ausblue, I know many of our farmers do plant shelter belts, over here.

  5. Ausblue this is really sad and a shame as well.  The farmers need to take better care of their livestock and I'm sure that many do or at least the ones that care enough because after all that's their livelihood.  With the planting of trees, it would certainly help matters greatly.

  6. Hi ausblue I didn't know you knew Dune, she is right. The govt. encourages it to claim a bigger "green credit" or what ever that c**p is about.

The farmers are now attempting to have the lambs come later in the season, but Mother Nature can be cruel and often strikes just after they are born, with another dumping.
