I'm not exactly sure what you mean by your question, but I'll take a stab at it.  If you follow the evolutionary record, there are very few organisms that persist in one form.  Some exceptions are cockroaches, crocodiles, and sharks.  But in the span of things humans haven't been around for very long and will most likely "go extinct" at some point.  

    However, extinction is a very relative term.  Many animals that we see as "extinct" have simply hybridized with a close relative, which is something that is very common in times of environmental stress.  Those genes are probably still out there, but when they stop appearing in the form we used to recognize we consider the animal to be extinct.  Species definitions are always fluid and always up for debate.

    The same thing happens with civilizations.  Many people think the Mayan civilation is "extinct," but there are many people alive today with Mayan ancestry.  The civilizations on the earth today will rise and fall, but life will go on in one form or another, and that is the important thing.
