  1. Thomas Hearns has a weak chin. He wasn't a natural middleweight. He was also KO by Iran Barkley who was a natural middle weight.

  2. Out of the mouth of Hearns-: "My legs were gone after the 1st round and I had to go for the knockout"

My opinion----If his legs were sound he would have outboxed Hagler.

  3. From what's been told, Hearns' entourage gave him a leg massage which apparently sapped all the strength from him.  He had to go for a KO because there was no way he was going 15 rounds.  I'd have loved to see a rematch as I think the Hitman could have turned it into a range-fight like he did against Leonard in their first fight.

But if you watch the fight, you see how Hearns faded unusually fast.  I think he also broke his hand and was pretty much dead in the water.

  4. As you say, Hearns was a big puncher and had great skills.  But Marvin Hagler was one of the greatest middleweights of all time, arguably second only to Sugar Ray Robinson, the greatest fighter of all time.  Hagler should have at least gotten a draw against Leonard and if championship fights went 15 rounds as they did in the old days (and still should in my opinion) instead of 12, he would have knocked Leonard out.

As for the Hearns fight, I saw it on closed circuit television at the Memorial Auditorium in Sacramento CA (this was way before the days of cable and satellite and I've obviously been on the planet for awhile, lol) and it remains the greatest three or fewer rounds fight I've ever seen and one of the top 10 of any duration I've ever seen. It was slam bang, rock 'em sock 'em from the get-go, with fans standing for the whole fight (you had to in order to see over the fans in front of you!).  Hearns staggered Hagler in the 1st and then Hagler took Hearns apart.  Catch it on ESPN Classics, they repeat it every so often.

  5. Hagler has a great chin, and Hearns got into one of the best fights of the century. I think Hearns felt he could knock out Hagler, and got knocked out cold.

You should see the fight, it was all action.

  6. Yo man........don't worry about any comments you perceive as negative...........i'm sure it's not meant the way you took it.........

I could tell you about the fight but i'm not you, i don't think like you and i might not see the fight the same way as you.............so..............just watch it yourself ...........

I just looked it up on Youtube and there are numerous videos of the fight there.............

I will only say that i agree with the assessment that it's the greatest 3 round fight ever.............and one of the best ever period.

I love Hearns crazy hair and his wild KO punches in this fight.........man........it's really good stuff...............check it out and see what you think............

  7. Hagler hit him with a hard shot and I heard Tommy broke his right hand in the first round had he not broken his hand he might have won it was a great fight

  8. Marvin Hagler was pissed at Hearns because when they were originally supposed to fight, Hearns got an injury and Hagler got mad becuase he thought Hearns was faking.  Hagler wanted to get the big paydays like Hearns and Leonard had already gotten, so when Hearns dropped out of the fight, he took it personal.  Hagler went after him from the opening bell and he didn't let up- he started the ring war and he finished it with a vengance.  There was no rematch because Hearns' people did not want to bring him back in the ring with someone like Hagler so quickly after getting knocked out like that- thats why Hearns faced a few lesser names (even though some of them were for world titles) directly after the bout; in short, he needed to get his confidence back.  Hagler on the other hand, only had 2 more fights before he retired- the war with John Mugabi and then the loss to Sugar Ray Leonard.  You stated that you've never seen the fight; please watch it because it is probably the best 3 rounds in boxing history- here it is from youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYHSHd1xf...

  9. Either you're not a real boxing fan or you're,  like..................12 or something.   I dont know ANY boxing fan who has not seen that fight.  They show it on ESPN quite often.

The reason Hearns got knocked out is because Hagler fought him the ONLY way he could beat him.   Hearns really IS a heavy hitter.  However, as John Mugabi learned,  Power means little if you can't hurt your opponent.   Hearns DID Indeed hurt Hagler but Hagler has one of the best chins in boxing history.

Hagler went right at Hearns.  He KNEW two things.  1.  If you give Hearns leverage he will jab you silly and then Pole-Ax you with that long right.  2. If given enough time Hearns would break open the years of scar tissue Hagler had on his face.

Hagler can fight all night long but not if Hearns is allowed to do what he does best.   Marvin fought like a demon.  He crowded Hearns, taking away the leverage Hearns always enjoyed during his career.

If you can ware down a puncher to a point where his power becomes a non-issue you have a good chance of knocking him out.  It's the Only way Hagler would have won.
