Why is a four chambered heart (like a human) necessary for an active lifestylr rather than a two chambered heart (like a fish)?

  1. Four chambers are necessary b/c humans have the respiratory system, ie lungs.

    Obviously, since fish have gills and don't breathe like humans, I'm guessing that's why they only have two chambers in their heart.


  2. Ask yourself what the 4 chambers do.  One large chamber pumps blood to most of the body. That is the Left Ventricle.  The smaller right ventricle pumps blood to the lungs to be oxygenated. The chambers that receive the blood are the atria.  Instead of typing all this out. Check out this site.

  3. The 2 ventricle-4 chamber heart prevents mixing of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood & allows the blood leaving the heart to have far more oxygen than it would otherwise.
