Question:

Heat, moisture, and mold? Help!

Ok I posted this earlier but apparently I wasn't clear enough. My family is very poor.

I live in a basement of my Inlaws house, 12 people live in the house (I miscounted before and said 11) 7 of them live in the basement along with 8 cats and a dog as well as a baby on the way.

The basement is very damp, mold is growing on the walls and floors and in closets....a real big mess. We bought a dehumidifier, which was very very expensive for us, money we could not spend. It works BUT as soon as summer came it was useless.

No exaduration it is 90 degrees down there, when the dehumidifier is on it gets near 100....unlivable.

Besides fans, is their anything reasonably priced that I can use to relieve the moisture, heat, mold, or even just the moldy smell (not of the animals because believe it or not we hardly notice them)

Please do not suggest that we kick people out of my house

  1. i don't know how much it costs but...there is this paint called "killz"  it will cover and kill mold and mildew.  I have used it but dont remember the cost.  Good luck!  I used to live with my 9 family members and 3 pets when i was prego with my daughter.  I feel for you.

  2. you need a window unit a/c to control the heat and dampness.

  3. buy bleach and add a little bit of water and put it on your wall. It shoud be less moldyier. Then use a air freshiner to cure the smell.

    Warning

    bleach smells bad!

so go to the library so you can cool of and wait.

also keep the doors and windows opened.

  4. Locate the source of the moisture, I doubt it all from people and pets. You may have a ground water drainage problem. If you have a slope above your home, dig a trench across the slope above your home and install a perforated plastic drain line.  This will work if you have ground water that is sub irrigating to your home.  Install fans in all windows and have the ones on the south and west exhaust, the others should supply the house. Also a fan to move the air from the basement to the outside will help.  Box and pedestal fans work best. The tower fans do not IMO move enough air.  Use bleach to kill the mold and then remove it by scraping and washing with soap and water.  Go to the Red Cross and ask for help, also try your church for donations of fans. All of these may help or may offer some advice.   Good Luck.
