Question:

Heat exhaustion during volleyball?

I take private 1-hour volleyball lessons during the summer to stay in shape for the fall season. I had my first one of the summer today and as always the gym was very hot. At first I was fine but after I served some and did some digging and shuffling side to side I got winded and needed water. This happened again about twenty minutes later. Then the third time it happened I got a little dizzy (only for a second) and then for the rest of the hour I felt like I was about to throw up. Drinking water only seemed to make me want to throw up more. Afterwards my face stayed red for about twenty minutes.

Is this heat exhaustion or dehydration or something?

I have more lessons and team practices in the same gym (it's my school gym) so what are some things I can do to prevent this from happening again?

  1. u no that happens with my team all the time. the gym isn't actually hot its just your working so hard that it doesn't matter. i think its a bit of both. you need to make sure you are drinking enough water and are resting at good intervals or you could get sick

  2. Your not drinking enough water before practice and probably not enough in general.  If the practice is only an hour the water your drinking during practice isn't going to help you right away it will be more beneficial for you later, still drink during but most likely your problem is that your not drinking enough water regularily.

  3. Good answers above here.

Drink water before and during the practice.

Take frequent breaks during practice for water.  Talk with your coach and tell them exactly what you said here.

You can also put cool water on your neck and head to help you cool off more.  If you put some cool water on your throat, it will go to your heart and cool off your body quicker.

  4. Our coach always tells us to drink water BEFORE we go to the gym. Before like drinking a lot 3 or more hours before you leave to go and then drinking a couple of glasses in the 3 hours right before. Then you are completely hydrated. If you are working really hard (like I'm thinking you are) it isn't really good to drink a lot at one time during your workout. Instead, take more breaks and take just a couple swallows during each break. That also helps your stomach. Then right after you get home, make sure you drink some more to regain what you lost. It helps if you stay away from sugary drinks like pop, kool-aid, etc. Don't forget to eat healthy too, you're putting strain on your body so you want it in top shape. Good luck!

  5. drink at least 4 cups of water a couple of hours before you play. while you play, don't drink water, drink gatorade or propel. water has no salts, so you don't have anything to feul yourself

  6. this is probably because of the summer heat and your running around and stuff...

tell your instructor that you need to take a break for a few minutes every time you start feeling dizzy and nauseous. Just sit down for a minute and get a little bit of water. Remember to keep hydrated, even when you're not dizzy. But don't drink too much.

don't push yourself too hard. you could get heat stroke.
