i need to work out the heat per gram of a fuel (Ethanol = CH3CH2OH) that is burned, heating 100 ml of water 20degrees C (Specific heat of water is 4.18). The mass of fuel lost is 3.76g.

I dont know if you need it, but the time was 216seconds

Any help would be EXCELLENT :)

  1. ∆H = m Cp dT

    m = 100 ml = 100 g

    Cp = 4.184 J / g°C

    dT = 20 °C

    ∆H = (100g) x (4.184 J / g°C) x (20 °C) = 8368 J

    so heat per gram = 8368 J / 3.76g = 2225 J /g = 2.23 KJ / g
