Question:

Heat pump - Outside unit won't turn on?

I just moved into a house I bought. It has a Weather King unit inside and a newer Tappan outdoor heat pump. It was working fine but I was stupid and while it was running kicked off the power at the furance so I could check the air filter. I turned it back on and the fan kicked right on but now the outdoor unit won't kick on. I checked all breakers and they are fine. What can I do?

  1. Turn off all circuit breakers and fuses, turn wall unit switch to off,  then pull outside main fuse on outside unit. Let every thing sit for 20-25 mins.

This should reset all the circuits on the furnace controler board.

Reset everything but do the wall unit last.

Once wall unit is turned on go directly to the outside unit and listen to the a/c to see if it trys to start if it does then it is fixed if not did it try to start? or it tried and didn't. its most likely either your capitor or one of the fuses is open.

  2. Buy a very inexpensive item I call  a tweeter you just hold it up to a electric line and hold down on like a pencil clip and if you have voltage it will make a chirping sound this is the best and safest way to check lines for voltage they are at any hardware or elect supply store it work on all lines this will tell if you have voltage to your outside unit if you do your Capacitor is bad or spin the fan blade with a knife or something Thur the top be care full it will start up fast

  3. Ours did that before, we just left the units on and in a few hours it righted itself, reset itself i guess. If not you may have to call someone.........:(

  4. THE EQUIPMENT HAS A TIME DELAY BOARD INSIDE AND WILL NOT START UP RIGHT AWAY, MOST TIME DELAYS ARE 15 MINUTES.

  5. well if you kicked off the breaker to check the filter ,,i think i would call a service company..can.t be to much wrong,ck out side by the unit and see if you have a svc disconnect box, some have brkrs, some hace disconnects.sounds like there's one breaker your overlooking.

  6. When you have the thermostat set to cool do you hear a humming sound at the outside unit?  If you don't can you check the furnace control board (if it has one) and see if you have any blown fuses.  Can you get a multi-meter and check to see if you have 24 volts at the small wires on the contactor in the outside unit?  You also might have knocked a wire loose that goes to the outside unit.  Also if there is a drip pan under the furnace look to see if there is a float switch that might be stuck.  This will shut off the power to the compressor if the condensate drain is plugged and keeps water from leaking all over the floor.  If there is a condensate pump these also can be wired to stop the compressor if the pump fails.  If you are getting 24 volts at the contactor try pressing the button on it with an insulated screwdriver to see if the compressor will start.  If it does pull the disconnects and turn off the furnace check to verify the 240 volts are off.  Note the positions of the wires on the contactor.  Remove it and take it to an electrical or HVAC supplier and get a new one.  Install the new one.  Connect the wires reset the disconnects and the furnace.  Everything should be working.  Good Luck
