Heater for betta fish?

Is it ok for the water heater to be submersed above its water line?

It depends on what kind of heater you have. There are the "hang on" types and the submersible heaters (which are almost always of better quality). Read the heater closely. chances are if it doesn't have a hanf on clip/s***w-clamp that it was meant to be submerged.

If it is a hang on heater, the mark is meant for you not to go below it, having water below this mark makes the filter prone to braking due the temperature gradient of the glass under and over the water. If it is a glass tube like heater, as long as your water level is above the water mark but at a level were there is still ONLY glass then you're ok, if you go higher with the level to were the plastic begins then you are at an electric shock zone and this might be deathly for your fish and worse, for you!

Make sure to not get too large a heater for your Betta a you do not wish to poach him. Submersible heaters are usually the best bet because they are not as likely too be exposed to the air when you do your regular water changes. If you expose the heating elements while they are hot and them put freshwater back n the glass tube is likely to break and maybe even to electrocute you if you put your hand in there. This means that before you do a water change make sure to unplug the heater and let the heating element "cool down" before taking water out.  This goes both for the hang on the back and the submersible heaters.

Bettas don't have to have heaters. I breed bettas and i keep them all in glasses without heaters. Especially if they didnt have a heater in the petstore. i have bettas that are worth hundreds of dollars and i dont use a heater. I would return the heater if i were u.
