Heath Bell prevails as the San Diego Padres defeat the New York Mets 3-2 – MLB Update
Heath Bell pitched a wonderful inning as a closer on Thursday, August 11 to help the San Diego Padres beat the New York Mets by 3-2 at Citi Field.
The most important aspect of the game was when Bell pitched a scoreless ninth to win his team an important victory. "It was just nice to go out there and go 1-2-3," Bell said. "It was more just for the whole bullpen. Like, there we go, we're back on track."
A night after the Padres recharged and won by 9-5, it was another satisfactory win. "We're doing awesome," Bell said. "The bullpen, if we hadn't made mistakes on Monday and Tuesday we wouldn't have lost on this road trip yet."
Assisted in this effort was Cameron Maybin’s homer in the eighth inning that changed the map of the game. "I was just telling myself, I've got to make something happen," Maybin said. "I got a good enough jump and was blessed with good enough speed to get
in there."
New York Mets had an ideal start when the four-game series kicked off on Monday, August 8. Winning the first by 9-8, a close encounter and the second by 5-4, an increasingly tough challenge once again, the Mets failed to maintain the momentum.
On Thursday, the Padres came up with a radically different approach to prevail. A game where the score was tied in the eighth, it was Maybin who took out the seemingly sinking ship of the Padres to put it on the right track, helping the team win a much needed
victory.
Thursday’s game commenced with Jonathon Niese pitching a strong inning for the New York Mets, concluding it without giving any run to the San Diego Padres. Cory Luebke followed with an inning in which he gave up a hit and allowed no run.
The game remained dominated by the starters of the both teams, however, Cory Luebke could not maintain the form in the third when Lucas Duda hit a two-run RBI to give the Mets 2-0 lead by the end of the third inning.
Cameron Maybin homered in the sixth against Niese to bring the lead down to 2-1, while Luis Martinez levelled the score with his single in the seventh. Aaron Cunningham scored a single in the eighth to score a tiebreaking run for the San Diego Padres.
That proved to be a lead that Luke Gregerson defended in the eighth with scoreless inning, while Heath Bell pitched a strong ninth as a closer to translate the 3-2 lead into a victory for the Padres.
