Heath Joske and Willian Cardoso advance to Round 2 of 2012 Telstra Drug Aware Pro – Surfing News
Australia’s Heath Joske and Brazil’s Willian Cardoso claimed top honours in their respective Round 1 (Round of 96) heats at the 2012 Telstra Drug Aware Pro that went down at Margaret River in Australia on Tuesday, March 20.
The victorious performance in the first round served to add both Joske and Cardoso to the Round 2 (Round of 48) line-up. Australia’s Taj Burrow and Guadeloupe’s Charles Martin also confirmed their place in the next round after securing runner-up position
in the 13th and 14th heat respectively.
The second Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Prime rated event of the season saw top surfers from around the globe converging to Margaret River to battle it out for top honours in six-to-foot wave, treating the crowd to a heavy dose of thrilling
action in the process.
The 13th heat saw the current No.1 surfer on the 2012 ASP World Title Championship rankings, Burrow, taking on his fellow countrymen Joske and Luke Campbell, along with Basque Country’s Aritz Aranburu in a four-man battle.
Despite being a heavy favourite, the 33-year-old Burrow struggled to find a good score and only managed to score a heat-total of 8.23 points, which included a 4.63 and 3.60-point wave. The score, however, proved enough to put him in runner-up place to ensure
his survival in the event.
“I don’t really surf out at Margaret River all that often,” Burrow said. “I was totally lost out there, we had a slow start with no sets. I like to catch a lot of waves in my heats, so I moved in to get the ball rolling and then bombs started coming through
and I missed them. I had a shocker. It’s all uphill from here.”
It was Joske who managed to clinch the win by scoring a 5.67 off his first business-wave and backing it up with a 4.53-point wave for a heat-total of 10.20 points.
Aranburu finished third with a heat-total of 7.50 points, while Campbell rounded out the bottom-position with a heat-total of 4.27 points. Both the surfers were consequently eliminated from the competition.
The 14th heat saw Cardoso walk away with top honours after scoring an outstanding 8.67 off his first business-wave later in the battle and immediately backing it up with a 4.03-point wave for a heat-total of 12.70 points.
Martin made the Round 2 cut as well through a heat-total of 11.34 points, which comprised of a 5.17 and 6.17-point wave.
Brazil’s Thiago Camarao and America’s Tim Reyes found the event coming to a premature end for them as they rounded out the bottom-two positions with a heat-total of 10.84 and 1.94 points respectively.
