Heathcote cruise past Circa 13-12 in Monty Waterbury Cup – Polo Update
Tommy Biddle scored ten times and had support, as Heathcote marked a 13-12 victory over Circa after a nail-biting contest in the Monty Waterbury Cup being contested at the Bridgehampton Polo Club on July 25, 2011.
Legendary goal-scorer Tommy Biddle speaking to the media after the match commented that they displayed wonderful team-work in the match. He said, “They’re a very good team. I just think that we played better as a team. We had a couple of calls go against
us in the fifth and they made good on the penalty shots. We didn’t panic, though, and got ready for the final chukker.”
Interestingly, Heathcote’s team earned three goals in the head of handicaps and added a couple of goals from the field effort. Magoo Laprida of Circa opened the scoring from the field and reduced Heathcote’s lead down to a single goal. Biddle counter-attacked
and regained a three goal lead, 5-2 at the end of the first chukka.
In the second frame, Francisco Lanusse opened the scoring, marked two goals and reduced the lead down to a solitary goal. However, Biddle of Heathcote retaliated and scored off a couple of goals to hold back their lead.
Both teams exchanged three goals in the third set of play and increased the suspense in the game. Laprida was the attacker from Circa who converted two penalty shots while added a goal from the field. From the other end, Biddle was only active attacker from
Heathcote who scored off penalty shots and field efforts. Heathcote was holding a four-goal edge, 10-6 at half-time.
In the second half of play, both teams resumed play in quite an aggressive style. However, it was Circa which dominated the next two chukkas. In the fourth frame, Laprida added a goal from a penalty shot while holding Heathcote at bay in the seven and half
minutes.
Both teams moved into the second last round with Circa trailing by three goals, 10-7. In the second last chukka, Lanusse accounted for a field effort while his team-mate Laprida added three back-to-back penalty shots to take their first lead in the game.
Amazingly, the tight defence from Circa kept Heathcote strikers at bay in the period.
In the final chukka, Heathcote’ team increased the pressure on Circa and obtained three goals while limiting them only for one. Biddle was the all time lively striker from Heathcote who added three more goals in the final seven minutes. Laprida though added
a score in the chukka but to no avail and they lost the game 13-12.
Tommy Biddle of Heathcote and Magoo Laprida of Circa were equalling the highest scorers with ten notches each. Lanusse accounted for two goals in the loss. On the other side, Heathcote obtained three goals in the head of handicap.
