Heathcote edge out Circa in Hampton Cup: 11-10 – Polo Update
Tommy Biddle scored seven times and had an assist, as the Men’s team of Heathcote edged out Circa by a single goal, 11-10 in the event opener of Hampton Cup that took place at the Bridgehampton Polo Club on August 19, 2011.
Highest point scorer namely Tommy Biddle while speaking to reporters after the game said, “It’s (Heathcote) a great team. There’s just no quit on this team. We fell behind early but just kept at it and got ourselves right back into the game. This is a very
special group.”
Before the game began, Heathcote received a couple of goals in the head of handicaps but failed to add any score from the field. Martin Pepa scored twice while his team-mate Guille Aguero notched the first goal of the day and closed out the chukka at 3-2.
In the second set of play, Heathcote improved their game and started a cautious style of play. Tommy Biddle scored off first penalty shot and had it all even at three-each. In the later time, Naco Taverna accounted for a goal and established their first
lead of the day. Owing to resilient defence from Heathcote, the Circa team failed to mark goal in the seven and half minute of play. The second frame was concluded with Heathcote holding a 4-3 lead.
Both teams exchanged similar action, as Heathcote added two goals while Circa obtained only single goal. Magoo Laprida notched a penalty goal. But the strikers from Heathcote were not sitting motionless, as Biddle scored a pair of back-to-back goals to hold
back their single goal lead, 6-4 at the halftime.
In the second half of play, the score changed without any action. Larry Austin was replaced with Heathcote skipper Steve Lefkowitz which reduced the scoring at 5-4. The action of the Circa team came alive in the second half when Laprida scored another goal
and tied the knots at five-all. In the later time, Pepa added a couple of consecutive goals and took the score at 7-5. The defenders from Circa kept Heathcote attackers at bay in the fourth frame.
Laprida once again opened the scoring through a field goal and expanded the lead up to three. In the later time, Biddle and Taverna scored one goal each and made reduction into the lead. Chris Del Gatto, the skipper of Circa’s side added one goal and doubled
the lead, 9-7. Biddle nailed in another goal in the waning moments and finished the period with Circa hanging on to a single goal 9-8 lead.
Biddle continued his action and converted a short penalty shot to tie the knots at nine-each. Pepa added another goal and put Circa ahead onto the scoreboard. However, Nick Manifold and Biddle added one goal each in the concluding moments and sealed the
victory for Heathcote.
