Heather Bansley, Liz Maloney beat German duo in FIVB beach volleyball World Tour circuit
The FIVB beach volleyball World Tour circuit is currently underway in Brasilis with several teams making a show of their skills. One recent match saw the Canadian Heather Bansley and Liz Maloney play their opening match of the season.
The Canadian women were up against their German counter parts, Karla Borger and Britta Buthe. The resulting competition between the two sides ended in a clean sweep and determined the Canadian players as the victors. The scoreboard showed the following final
set scores: 21-19 and 21-19.
The German squad had managed to make it to the recent match by handing out a defeat to the duo of Marie-Andrée Lessard of Ville Lasalle, Que., and Annie Martin of Sherbrooke, Que. The match had taken place between the two teams on Monday.
After handing out a defeat to the Germans, the Canadian duo contested with the United States team of Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh as well. The contest between the two sides ended with a victory for the US as they swept the match at the following final
set scores: 22-20 and 21-13. The US squad are the Olympic champions and also hold the honour of being the top seeds in the tournament.
The Canadian women do not just look into the current tournament in order to make their mark, they are eyeing the upcoming London 2012 Olympic Games. By delivering an impressive performance, the Canadian women plan to qualify for the Olympic Games.
Maloney expressed her feelings in the following manner regarding the performance the duo put up in their recent match, “We played really consistently in that first match. It’s what we needed to do to get this tournament off to a great start. They play the
same way we do, so it was anybody’s match. We were very aggressive and confident. We certainly made them earn their victory but we were hoping to fare better. We’ve had a very good off-season of training and recently had an excellent camp in Los Angeles.
Last year’s success was a big boost.”
