Heather Olver and Kate Robertshaw emerge as champions in 2013 Spanish Open – Badminton News
Women’s Doubles trophy of XXVI Spanish Open belonged to the British duo Heather Olver-Kate Robertshaw who remained invincible in the final round on May 26, 2013.
Both female shuttlers forged a fruitful chemistry against Maiken Fruergaard and Sara Thygesen of Denmark and this title match lasted for 67 minutes in local badminton complex of Madrid.
The tandem of Heather Olver and Kate Robertshaw took some time to gain their momentum but both experts managed to win the ending two games with a favourable result of 21-13 and 22-20.
Though, the Danish pair bagged first match point with 21-18 score but they failed to capitalise this lead and lost a golden opportunity to lock the honour in this international event.
Maiken and Sara amazed everyone with a staggering knock in the first set. They launched an intensive attack and placed a respectable total on the points table. This initial advantage helped them to rule the court
in the next couple of rallies.
They strengthened their grip on the game with a mountainous figure of 11 and then served the notice of their supremacy by putting an overwhelming score of 21-18.
However, this proved their last success in this tournament as the British campaigners showed strong character in pressure situation and brought the contest to right balance.
The partnership of Heather and Kate looked at its best in the second set, as both female shuttlers did not give the opposing shuttlers even a single chance to proceed on the points table. They mounted pressure
by registering a significant figure of 11 and then magnified the impact with an unbeatable strategy in second half of the set.
They did not lose focus at any stage of the game and swept the table with an unassailable lead in 21-13 total.
With this development, both teams became equal in match score position and the third match point became consequential. They put all in their possession to oust the opponent in decider but neither of them could
enjoy a permanent lead.
The decider remained interesting all the way to game point situation and this nerve-racking tussle ended when Heather-Kate claimed the trophy with 22-20 margin.
