Heather Watson: British superstar in making (Part I) – Tennis Special
Heather Watson is the new sensation from Great Britain. The 20-year-old kid is just absolutely mind-startling and definitely something tennis fanatics are looking forward to in the upcoming era. She is the highest ranked Briton,
however, just two ranks lower is her best friend Laura Robson who was previously the top ranked British player.
Watson is nurtured by four personnel who will stay her idols forever. All of them had something to say about the most astonishing achievements from their student who became the first ever women in past 24 years to represent Great
Britain in a Women Tennis Association tour and win it. The 20-year-old Watson won the HP Japan Women’s Open in Osaka on the 14th of October to register that emphatic record.
Jo Robinson is the senior coach at Guernsey Tennis Centre and he was the first man to have trained the right-handed Briton. Watson started training at the age of two. She was very fond of making friends wherever she went and that
eased the pressure on her parents as well because usually, she found someone to live with on junior ITF tours and the cost went down.
Watson liked swimming and dancing as well. Guernsey was such a small island that a person could do one thing at noon and the other at night. From all her likings, the Briton liked tennis the most. Robinson mentioned, “I can still
remember one of the other coaches calling me over to see her hit a backhand when she was five. She played the shot perfectly, even though he had only shown her once.” So, apparently the kid has the strongest backhand in the town.
Andrew Fisher is another coach at the same place where Watson started her training. Something that will fascinate every reader about Watson was said by him, “There was a group of five or six kids who got together when I was working
in the Channel Islands between 2000 and 2004. Heather was eight then, and she was the weakest player, because she was the youngest and most of the others were boys. But even then, I believed her ball-striking and athleticism was good enough to make her a top-100
player.”
The rest will be continued in part II.
