Heather Watson and Laura Robson: The race for number one Briton title continues – Tennis News
World number 50, Heather Watson, has once again alarmed her best friend Laura Robson about her potential by superseding the 18-year-old Briton in the world rankings. She is now two spots ahead of her compatriot and ended the short
reign of Robson as the number one Briton in the world. It has been an emphatic battle between the two athletes who has taken the tennis to next level in just a single season. Both of them started outside the Top-100 players in the world in January and now
one of them is already amongst Top-50 whilst the other is just two ranks behind in breaking into that elite category.
Commenting about her on-court rivalry with Robson, Watson said, “Laura and I have come through the rankings together - juniors and seniors - and we're both very competitive, so when we see the other doing well, it pushes us. Knowing
Laura did so well in China a few weeks ago definitely motivated me this week. But I think it's great we're really good friends off the court as well."
Watson also holds the record of breaking 24 years drought of British women tennis. She won the title at the HP Japan Open in Osaka on 14th of October and became the first Briton lady to win a premier Women Tennis Association
title in over two decades. She defeated the Taiwanese contestant, Chang Kai-Chen, in the finale after saving four breakpoints on her way. Talking about those four critical points on her life, Watson joked, “I was already thinking about how I was going to cry
in the locker room! She further added, “But after I saved the first one, I just took it point by point. I'm really proud of myself for getting through that.”
Both these players are equally capable of registering landmarks for themselves as well as their country. Robson had the opportunity to become the first Briton lady in 24 years to become the champion is a premier WTA event but she
squandered that chance at Guangzhou. She was up against another Taiwanese superstar, Su-Wei Hsieh, in the final; came back a set down to enforce the final battle into play but couldn’t handle the onslaught and surrendered 3-6, 7-5, 4-6.
So, it will be interesting to witness which one of the two best friends will have the title of number one Briton at the end of the season.
