Heather Watson breaks into the Top-40 category in the latest edition of WTA rankings – Tennis News
Number one Briton, Heather Watson, has improved her career-high ranking to world number 39 with a decent show at Memphis International last week. She jumped a couple of places to break into the Top-40 players of the world and she
is really working hard to make a mark. She is expected to break into the Top-30 players by the start of the Wimbledon Championships which will be hosted by her home nation, Great Britain.
She started the new season at ASCB Classic in Auckland and defeated the fifth seed Romanian star, Sorana Cirstea, in the opening round. However, she was assisted by an injury to her rival who withdrew from the contest after losing
the opening set 3-6. In an intense battle with Kiki Bertens of Netherlands, Watson came second and departed the city of Auckland at a low-note. She played well at the Australian Open; ousted two players Alexandra Cadantu and Ksenia Pervak before losing out
to the fourth seed Pole, Agnieszka Radwanska, in round three.
The 20-year-old Briton had a topsy turvy tour of Pattaya City where she defeated Timea Babos of Hungary but lost to a Latvian qualifier, Anastasija Sevastova. She won three of her four Round Robin matches at the Federation Cup
in early February and returned from Memphis with a third round exit to her name.
Watson entered the tournament as the fourth seed contest; survived the opening onslaught of the Kazakh veteran, Galina Voskoboeva, and defeated Andrea Hlavackova of Czech Republic in the second round. However, she failed to deliver
against the Swiss athlete, Stefanie Voegele, probably due to the tiresome two matches prior to that quarter-final. She lost in straight sets but did manage to gather enough points to break into the Top-40 players list for the first time in her career.
Laura Robson, another Briton, holds her rank as the 42nd ranked player in the world. She is the best friend of Watson and both of them have shared short cameos as the Britain’s top ranked female athlete in the previous
season. The Top-10 rankings in the women category are unchanged.
