Heather Watson continue to press hard for the number one British spot – Tennis News
World number 78, Heather Watson, is pushing her compatriot, Laura Robson, for the number one place in the British women tennis rankings. In the midst of the current season, she was the best player from her country but the left-handed
teenager took over her place and rocked the show with some mind-startling performances. The 20-year-old Watson is pressing hard to make her opponent work for her points and push her to limits in order to retain the number one British rank.
Commenting about Robson, she stated, “I think it’s great, she’s doing well and I hope we can both push each other along. When she sees that I do well, I hope that pushes her as well and when I see her do well, that definitely pushes
me.”
She further added, “Yeah, it depends on the draw and all that but it seems to work that way. When one does well, then the next time, the other one does well too. So it is good and I’m glad that we can push each other along because
we’re both very competitive. We both want to do well, when we see the other one doing well.”
Watson commenced the current season in Moorilla Hobart International in Australia. Reached the opening round of the tournament from the qualifying stage but couldn’t pass through it. She was handed a very tough draw at the Australian
Open; faced the reigning world number one, Victoria Azarenka. The cheap loss at the PTT Pattaya Open also dismantled her confidence a bit but the 20-year-old Briton continued to work hard.
The breakthrough performance for Watson came in the Sony Ericsson Open at Miami where she reached third round being the wildcard entrant. The two victims included the Romanian diva, Sorana Cirstea, and the Czech superstar, Lucie
Safarova. It was a classic entertainment provided by the British underdog. She continued the good work, reached the second round of the French Open in Paris and third round at the AEGON Classic in Birmingham.
Watson was ousted by the number one Pole, Agnieszka Radwanska, in the third round of the Wimbledon Championships. However, the two players that were dispatched by the youngsters included Iveta Benesova and Jamie Hampton. The good
work continued for the British tennis icon who trashed few of the very best players in the world.
The Briton lost an epic three-setter against the former world number one, Maria Sharapova, in the second round of the Toray Pan Pacific Open; winning the opening set 7-6(7) but losing the following two 3-6, 4-6. So, it has been
a fairy tale for the Briton who is looking to break into the Top-50 players by the end of the season.
