Heather Watson determined to enter the Top-20 rankings – Tennis News
Right-hander, Heather Watson, was the first British challenger after 25 years to win the Japan Open in October 2012. She is one of the emerging tennis stars ready to launch a success campaign in start of the next year and targets
the Top-20 WTA Premier Rankings.
In an interview with BBC representative, Watson said, “It was so special, it's given me the confidence to get fit and motivate myself for the New Year. I have a general idea about world rankings and I'd love to be around the 20s
at the end of 2013. It's been a great year, but I still feel I have a long way to go and a lot of improving to do which is the exciting thing. I'm sitting down with my team this week and discussing what my goals are going to be for next year.”
Ranked world number 49, Watson faced a tough start at the Australian Open Grand Slam tournament this year. She bagged home a straight-sets loss at the hands of the reigning world number one, Victoria Azarenka. She was unable to
contest beyond any major tournaments and suffered disappointing defeats in the qualifying rounds of most of the WTA events.
She started to pull up pace at the Sony Ericsson Open held at Miami, as she rallied until the third round. She gave shocker to the higher ranked professionals but received an unfortunate failure at the hands of Azarenka for the
second time.
At the clay courts of the French Open Grand Slam, she contested until the second round. Her performance slightly improved at the All-England-Courts of Wimbledon Championships at home soil. She faced the Czech contender, Iveta Benesova,
in the first round and against the American, Jamie Hampton, in the second encounter of the tournament. She was thrashed in the third round by the Pole number one, Agnieszka Radwanska.
Preserving her consistency, she made it to the second round of the London 2012 Olympics. She suffered a loss at the hands of the Russian Maria Kirilenko. At the US Open, she was paired with the Chinese veteran, Na Li, in the first
round and despite of her struggle, she was unable to take the lead. Nonetheless, the hard courts of Osaka proved to be fortunate for her, securing her lead and is highly motivated. Let us see how things turn in her favour!
