Heather Watson disposes of Anne Kremer in opening round – Bell Challenge 2011
British teenager, Heather Watson, continued to impress the tennis fans, as she outplayed Anne Kremer of Luxembourg in the opening round of the Bell Challenge on Monday.
The contest was staged on the hard courts of Quebec, Canada, with the 19-year-old Briton registering a comprehensive victory in straight sets 6-2, 6-4, to move into the second round of the $220,000 WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) tournament.
The match was played on the hard courts of Quebec, Canada and Watson displayed her tremendous power game to overcome her opponent in style. Currently holding the 107th spot in WTA World Rankings, Watson played the contest far better than her ratings suggest. She was brilliant with her agile footwork and pinpoint hitting in the game, driving the Luxembourger veteran from the competition in the most assertive manner.
It was the 31st victory for the Briton in the running year and the first one against Kremer. Although Watson delivered just 54 per cent of her serve on target, she reeled off 24 out of 39 first serve points in the matchup to come out as the winner in the end. Kremer also secured 24 out of her 48 points in the game but squandered away a number of opportunities in the contest to remain on the back foot throughout.
The opener was off to a steady start, but the players gathered up pace later on. Watson drew first blood in the fourth game to break into a 3-1 lead early in the competition but was immediately brought down by Kremer in the very next game with a cracking serve break. The Briton kept on with her aggression and nailed two straight break point conversions to race through the opening set at 6-2, getting 1-0 in the contest.
Competition become more enthralling in the following set, with both players trading a total of five serve breaks among them. Watson’s sixth serve break of the day in the 10th game sealed the second set for her at 6-4, sending her into the second round of Bell Challenge. She will face the winner of the match between Elena Bovina of Russia and the fifth seeded Swede, Sofia Arvidsson, in the second round of the tournament.
