Heather Watson is a future world number one material – Tennis News
World number 50, Heather Watson, is bidding for something big now. She is eyeing to break into the Top-10 category and even believes that she is capable of reaching the number one spot in the world. She might be saying that a bit
too early but nothing should be taken away from her form and performances in the recent times because the 20-year-old kid has shown some emphatic talent that is seriously threatening the top seed contestants in every tournament.
In an interview, Watson commented, “In the men’s game you have your top players who usually win week in and week out. But in the women’s it’s very different. Anybody on their day can come through and win. Look at Angelique Kerber
and Sara Errani: they were ranked around the 100 mark a year ago. Now they are in the top 10, I think the women’s game has definitely a lot more opportunity for the younger players.”
She is right about the difference in men and women tennis. The Top-4 players in the male department have been there forever. They have won the last 30 Grand Slam Championships and no one outside that category has been able to put
his hands to some Major title. They have cemented their place. Consider Rafael Nadal who was ranked number three in the world at the start of the season. He has dropped just one place in the world rankings despite missing out half of the season due to injury.
So, the gap is just too big between the Top-4 and the rest.
However, the female tennis is absolutely different. Caroline Wozniacki who was ranked number one in the world at the start of the season is not even in Top-10 at the moment. Therefore, the young girl from Great Britain has the
chance to accomplish her dream in the foreseeable future. She commented at one instance, “I definitely believe in myself. I wouldn’t be in the game if I didn’t. I have the mental toughness and the capability to do it. I have the mental toughness and the capability
to do it.”
Let’s hope the youngster realises her dream and makes her country proud.
