Heather Watson is gutted by Andy Murray’s selection of Laura Robson over her – Tennis News
Gutted recently crowned number one Briton, Heather Watson, bursts out her anguish for not being picked for the mix doubles team at Olympics. She expressed her discontent on the reigning US Open Champion, Andy Murray, for choosing
her best friend Laura Robson instead of her. She wanted to play the London Olympics and was ranked higher than Robson at that time. She thinks the she deserved a shot at Olympics title but doesn’t want to take anything away from the performance and co-ordination
shown by the 18-year-old Robson and the 25-year-old Murray who ended the second best team in the competition, winning the silver medal.
Watson said, “Honestly; yeah. I wanted to play. It was the Olympics. I think anyone in my position would have wanted that opportunity. But it was his decision. It's fine. They ended up with a silver medal. That's brilliant. It's
made me stronger.” It was a comment that was made with utmost respect to the team chosen for mixed doubles London Olympics but the grief was obvious on the face of the youngster who couldn’t feel the heat of playing such an elite tournament and that too at
her home soil.
Moreover, the youngster who is just 20 years of age believes that world is going to see a new number one player soon. She is eyeing the top ranked spot in the world and has already broken into the Top-50 players’ category after
clinching the maiden Women Tennis Association title at HP Japan Women's Open in Osaka. She is the first British women athlete to clinch a WTA trophy in 24 years. So, it means the last time a British lady grabbed a WTA trophy; Watson wasn’t even on the face
of the globe. She added, “My ambition is to get to No 1 in the world and win one of the grand slams. You have to be selfish to win. You can't be sympathetic to your opponent. I definitely believe in myself. You know all these girls think the same thing, so
it's just who can do it, and I'm just going to do whatever it takes.” It will be interesting to see what Laura Robson has to say about this dilemma.
