British women players have not been able to make it to third round of the Wimbledon Championship for the past 10 years. However, the 20-year-old Heather Watson has written a new history with a second round triumph over the American
starlet, Jamie Hampton, and has qualified for the third round draw in the year’s third Grand Slam championship. It is the first occasion for the British fans to witness their women representative playing the last 32 of the Wimbledon in a decade and it has
to be none other than the eye-catcher of the season, Watson.
Elena Baltacha was the last women who reached the third round of the Wimbledon Championship in 2002 and since then no British woman has been able to occupy a place in the final 32 of the Championship at All England Club. It is
definitely a time to celebrate for the British fans as they have finally found some world class talent in a player who is just 20 years of age.
Watson stated in a post-match interview, "I'm just so pleased to get through that match. It definitely wasn't easy and I knew I had to play my best. She wasn't at her best at the beginning and I tried to take advantage. Then at
the end I was telling myself not to double-fault on match point." Unfortunately for her, the 97th ranked left-handed booming star, Laura Robson, who is just 18-year-old, was unable to outfox the former French Open Champion, Francesca Schiavone,
in the first round match yesterday having won the opening set comprehensively.
World number 103, Watson, will also team up with her best friend, Laura Robson, to represent their country in the upcoming London Olympics. Both of them have been awarded a wildcard entry to play at their home soil in the most
awaited that is played after every four years.
It has been a formidable year for the two youngsters from Great Britain. They have proved their worth on several occurrences making the scenario difficult for the top ranked athletes. Multiple upsets followed by some stupendous
