Heather Watson says she did not start pro tournaments as early as other girls – Tennis News
World number 49, Heather Watson, is a top ranked British woman in the world of tennis.
However, she is always been tested by her best friend, Laura Robson, who is just four spots away from snatching that number one ranking from the 20-year-old Watson.
An off-court friendship and an on-court rivalry has encouraged both these players to groom emphatically well over the course of years. Robson is just 18-year-old but she played regular tennis and turned pro earlier than her opponent.
The number one Briton stated in an interview to the media reporters, “I didn't start pro tournaments as early as other girls because I was still in school. I finished when I was 18, and I was still playing junior tournaments. Before the US Open [in 2009]
I didn't even know if I was going to turn pro. I thought maybe I should go to college because I wasn't getting the results I wanted.”
Watson was displeased by the mixed-doubles choice of third ranked Andy Murray for the London Olympics. She was ranked higher than Robson and deserved a shot at playing in the most elite tournament that comes after a gap of four years.
However, the 25-year-old Murray chose to team up with the 18-year-old Robson and ended up as the silver medallist in the contest. The result wasn’t bad at all but the snub definitely encouraged Watson to play better and prove that she deserved to play at
Olympics.
In the final tour of her 2012 season, Watson proved herself by claiming the title at Osaka. She ended a 24-year drought by becoming the first ever British woman to lift the Women Tennis Association event trophy.
Watson believes that it will take around three-four years for her to reach the top of her game. She rues her incompetent performance against the fourth ranked Pole star, Agnieszka Radwanska, during the third round match at Wimbledon.
She said, “I just played awful. I just didn't do anything right, I tried to do way too much, and it really backfired.”
The Briton knows her flaws and wants to get rid of them as early as possible. It will help her boost the learning process and gather few more titles in the upcoming season.
