Heather Watson, just 20 years of age, registered a marvellous season under her belt in 2012.
She started outside the Top-100 category and rushed her way up to world number 49 at the end of the year; captured her maiden title at the HP Japan Women’s Open at Osaka.
Watson understands the troubles of backing up a fantastic season with another startling year. Therefore, she plans on continuing the process of improvement at the Florida Academy in United States of America.
Moreover, the youngster has pointed out some flaws in her game that will be worked upon during the holidays (season break). She is pressing hard to perform better in every contest and that frame of mind is definitely going to help her nurture better than
her age-fellows. She has already become the number one national and still has a lot of years in her professional career.
Watson commented in an interview, “There's so much I can improve on in my game. I need to hit bigger shots. I've been working on that a lot, being more aggressive, coming to the net. I love coming to the net and volleying. I love playing doubles and I think
doubles is brilliant for working on that. I think that's the good part that I've got a lot to work on.”
The 20-year-old Briton ended the 24-year drought of no Women Association Title for British woman on her last tour of the season in Osaka. She trashed Polona Hercog in the opening round after bouncing back a set down against the sixth seed Anabel Medina Garrigues.
She slammed down Pauline Parmentier in the quarter-finals before seeing off Misaki Doi in the semis. In the final, the youngster won a nail-biting contest against Kai-Chen Chang of Taiwan; winning an epic three-setter with the final scores of 7-5, 5-7, 7-6(4).
Watson also impressed at the French Open; reaching the second round of the tournament and carried the momentum in the Wimbledon Championships where she faced a third round exit at the hands of this year’s Wimbledon finalist, Agnieszka Radwanska, of Poland.
So, it seems like it is a beginning of a successful era for the British youngster.
