Heather Watson shocks Elena Vesnina in the opening round – Roland Garros French Open 2012
Briton booming starlet, Heather Watson, flew the Briton’s flag high in the Roland Garros French Open by capsizing the 83rd ranked Russian, Elena Vesnina, in the opening round. She bagged the win in straight sets 6-2,
6-4 and became the first qualifier of the tournament to reach the second round.
It was a perfect revenge of the loss that hurt the 20-year-old Briton, a couple of years ago, when she lost to Vesnina in the opening round of the Family Circle Cup at Charleston. Now, the head-to-head scores are levelled at 1-1
and next battle between the two professionals will be an exciting one for sure.
Watson chose an aggressive style of play and advanced towards the net on every possible occasion to cut down the angles of her rival. She started off with flying colours; winning the first four points that featured three eye-startling
winners.
The Briton took an early lead in the opening set through a successful conversion of the first breakpoint in the fourth game. She raced away to a lead of 4-1 with a thunderous serve hold and hinted at another stunning result for
her fans in Great Britain.
She broke serve in the eighth game to bag the opening set with no problem at all. The 25-year-old Russian was left wondering about the way things had gone in the match. She was clueless as to how she should handle the onslaught
of her rival.
The second set didn’t change luck for the Russian apart from an early breakthrough in the third game that was just held for few moments before gifting the break back in the following game. Another exchange of breakpoints on the
red dirt of France kept the scores together.
However, it was clear that the Briton booming icon was dominating the proceedings. She bagged the serve hold featuring four winners on the trot and broke serve to register yet another upset of her career.
In a post-match interview, she confessed, “I haven't had the best year so far, then suddenly in Miami I started to play a lot better, and I've just carried on working hard. I knew I had a lot of points to defend here but I didn't
want to focus on that, I just wanted to take each round at a time, and I have, and I've ended up playing really well.”
Next up for the little mistress is the German tennis icon, Julia Goerges.
