Heather Watson squashes Sharon Fichman in the first qualifier – Roland Garros French Open 2012
World number 109, Heather Watson, squashed the 211th ranked Canadian, Sharon Fichman, to book a spot in the second qualifiers of the Roland Garros French Open on Wednesday. She wasted little time in ousting the 21-year-old
rival and registered straight sets 6-1, 6-2 triumph.
Watson is a very aggressive player and the glimpse of her emphatic play was witnessed on the red dirt of Paris. She was coming on from a two match losing streak so wanted to change that and she did that in style. On the other hand,
Fichman was already struggling to stamp her authority at the professional level; started the match in nervy fashion and never looked threatening at all.
The 20-year-old British star started the match with a serve hold and soon took a lead of 3-1 with a breakthrough in the fourth game. She continued to hammer her opponent and won eight out of the 10 points in the following two games
to register another breakthrough and recorded a resounding lead of 5-1. She faced no trouble at all in holding the final serve game and the first set was ended in a flash.
Just one game in the first set and struggling to exert any sort of pressure on the Briton, the Canadian starlet looked completely down and out in the second set as well. She lost the serve game and went down to a trail of 1-3.
Nothing was right for the Canadian. She held her serve in the fifth game to lessen the trail. However, the onslaught from the other end continued and Watson broke serve for the second time in the set to take a unassailable lead
of 5-2.
It was a classic performance from the future British superstar who has proved her worth in the doubles category as well. She and her best friend, Laura Robson, have ruled on the doubles players’ category at the juniors as well
as the senior level.
So, she is the hot favourite contestant to reach the main round of the French Open. She plays her next match against Ons Jabeur of Tunisia.
