Heather Watson to warm-up at the ASB Classic in Auckland – Tennis News
Heather Watson, a 20-year-old sensation from the Great Britain will warm up her body for the year’s first Grand Slam Championship, the Australian Open, at the ASB Classic event in Auckland.
She was scheduled to take part in this year’s edition of the tournament as well but couldn’t feature due to an injury forced withdrawal which was a major disappointment of the season for the number one Briton who is now ranked 49th in the world.
Born in Guernsey, Watson resumed her training in the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy, situated in Florida, this week. She made her debut in Auckland in 2011; reached the quarter-finals of the event having started from the qualifying rounds which was a massive
achievement for a teenager. She continued the hard work and registered a season full of upsets and memories in 2012.
The 24-year-old drought of no title for the British woman in the field of tennis was ended by the right-handed Watson who captured the singles title in Osaka, just a month ago in October which was her final tour of the season. She also cruised into the third
round of Wimbledon Championships at the All England Lawn Tennis Club and almost gave a nightmare to the fourth ranked Pole star, Agnieszka Radwanska, before losing a hard fought battle.
It will be the second appearance for the British in the ASB Classic event. She will look to improve her record at Auckland by overpowering some of the most famous tennis ladies including the likes of Agnieszka Radwanska, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Vera Zvonareva,
Julia Goerges, Yaroslava Shvedova and Yanina Wickmayer.
Other participants in the tournament will be Marina Erakovic, Sorana Cirstea, Christina McHale, Simona Halep, Jie Zheng, Elena Vesnina, Aranxta Rus, Petra Cetkovska, Kiki Bertens, Kirsten Flipkens, Magdalena Rybarikova, Mona Barthel, Jamie Hampton, Kristina
Mladenovic, Polona Hercog, Johanna Larsson, Pauline Parmentier and Romina Oprandi. The draw of 32 players is still not completed and some of the slots are to be filled probably with the introduction of qualifiers as well as some wildcard entrants who will
look to battle it out for the season-opener in Auckland.
