Heather Watson trounces Melinda Czink in the opening round – AEGON Classic 2013
Local challenger, Heather Watson, got the better of the Hungarian challenger, Melinda Czink, in straight sets at the AEGON Classic 2013 on Tuesday. She notched up a 6-4, 7-6(0) victory against the Hungarian to power into the second
round at this WTA International event taking place in Birmingham, United Kingdom.
Seeded 14th in this event, Watson fended off late resilience to outsmart the Hungarian in their second encounter. As a result, the Brit not only avenged her loss at Nottingham two years ago but also levelled the head-to-head series
against Czink.
The local contender stated in a courtside interview after bagging the match, "It wasn't great that I let go of the break in the second set, but I kept it together and played a good tie-break, so I'm not really thinking too much
about it. I think I was seeing the finish line rather than just thinking about the next point. But I'm happy I ended up closing it out. After winning today it motivates me more for the future. When I was out of the game I was thinking about how I wanted to
be back, but you never really realize how much until you're actually back."
The 21-year-old made a convincing entry at the Edgbaston Priory Club and held her opening serve to level the scores at 1-1. She continued hitting angled shots and held her remaining serves with poise. Watson got the breakthrough
in the seventh game and pulled out the opener with a 6-4 win.
Ranked 54th in the WTA Premier Rankings, Watson maintained consistency in her game in the following set. She got the coveted break in the seventh game and jumped to a 5-3 lead. Despite squandering her edge in the 10th
game, the Brit remained calm and took the set to a tie-breaker. Watson went berserk in it and eventually carved out a 7-6(0) win.
Overall, the local starlet manufactured a lower first serve share of 63 per cent as opposed to her rival’s 67 per cent but tremendously marked 31 out of 37 points on it. In addition to this, Watson fired seven aces and took full
advantage of the Hungarian’s five double faults.
Next in queue for Watson is the Russian qualifier, Alla Kudryavtseva, who stunned the Japanese contestant, Kimiko Date-Krum, in straight sets to set-up this meeting. If the Brit carries her rhythm, she will face off the American
qualifier, Alison Riske, in the round of 16.
