Heather Watson’s and the new beginning of British women tennis – Tennis News
20-year-old professional, Heather Watson, is a new sensation in the tennis world after becoming the number one Briton in both singles and doubles categories. Everyone is talking about the youngster and she seems to be the hottest
underdog to beat at the moment in any tournament.
Watson hit the headlines just a couple of weeks ago when she reached the third round of the Wimbledon Championships at her hometown and became the first ever British women to make this far in the year’s third Grand Slam Championship
since 2002. So, it means the last time any Briton made it to the round of 32 in the Wimbledon; Watson was just 10-year-old.
The second major milestone that the Briton booming starlet achieved was her maiden WTA (Women Tennis Association) title on Saturday when she teamed up with the Ekaterina Makarova to win the doubles trophy at the Bank of West Classic,
contested in Stanford.
On her achievements, the Briton right-handed stated, "Being British No.1 has always been one of my goals, in singles and doubles. I'm glad I've achieved it now. I just want to keep climbing the rankings now. Set new goals, reach
new targets and just keep improving."
Maiden WTA title means a lot to the British star who commented, “I love to play finals. You know you have to win them, because nothing's going to be given to you. Marina and I really went out there and gave it everything in Stanford.
But there wasn't time for celebration - we had to shower, change and hop on a plane to come here for the next one. After I'm done here I'll celebrate.”
Laura Robson, an 18-year-old British tennis ace, is Watson’s best friend and they are together in the doubles category of most of the tournaments but unfortunately the two friends couldn’t lift their maiden title together at Stanford
because the left-handed teen was contesting in other tournament, XXV Italiacom Open.
It would have been a marvellous moment for the two promising players to lift their first title together and prove it to the world that they are out there to claim the throne that was lost by the British female tennis professional,
a long time ago.
Watson will definitely grow into a world class act and so do the semi-finalist of the XXV Italiacom Open in Palermo, Robson. It is just a matter of time that the two players will be seen amongst the Top-50 players in the world.
