Heather Watson’s social acceptability dilemma – Tennis News
Ranked 49th in the WTA Premier Rankings, Heather Watson, complains that she becomes lonely and depressed during her tennis tours and tends to hibernate. She complains of not fitting well in the team and sometimes in
tournaments suffers for several social acceptability issues.
In an interview with the media, Watson said, “Lots of times I feel quite lonely. I just want to go home and see everybody, because I hardly get to see my friends and family during the season. It’s really tough, always living out
of a suitcase or in a hotel. Playing your match, then going straight back to your hotel room – you’re on your own a lot. “I don’t really fit in. I couldn’t be mean and not talk to people if I tried. They believe that it allows them to focus. In their minds,
they’re not playing a friend, they’re playing an opponent. It’s difficult, though.”
The 20-year-old professional possesses a limited circle of friends and only feels comfortable around them. On the other hand, she maintains friendly ties with her compatriot, Laura Robson and her doubles partner, Marina Erakovic.
Currently she is receiving training for the upcoming Australian Open 2013.
The right-hander demonstrated a remarkable performance in the year 2012. Although, her performance at the major Grand Slam tournaments was average, she has set an amazing record in the other WTA challengers displaying her potential.
The British contender made it to the second round of the French Open championships held at the clay courts of Paris. Her performance improved at the green grass courts at the Wimbledon Championships. She made it until the third
round but unfortunately received a straight sets defeat at the hands of the higher ranked Agnieszka Radwanska. Her performance at the hard courts was satisfactory as it was impossible for her to gain momentum.
The British junior attained new a record by becoming the first British player in century to secure the HP Japan Women’s Open held at the hard courts of Osaka. She has skilfully tuned herself and has drastically improved her game
plan. If she continues a more serious game plan then she has a fair chance to be a part of the world top 10.
