  2. When the sun is directly overhead, the intensity of the sun is most intense. That occurs only in the tropics. At a latitude of 45, the sun's intensity is reduced because the suns light hits at a 45 degree angle. (The surface area is increased by sqrt(2) = 1.414 and intensity is reduced by the inverse.)

    At high altitudes the light intensity may actually be greater because of less atmosphere, however, the density of the air is much less and this would cause the temperature to to be lower. Also, at higher altitudes there may be snow which would reflect the light back into space.
