Question:

Heating wont work?

I have just moved into a flat and its gas heating. The gas is paid for like a top up card, so I put money onto the card and loaded it into the gas machine and it uploaded correctly and said the gas was on.

But anytime I put the heating on, none of the radiators heat up and there is never any warm water. I thought the radiators might need to be bled but the pipes going into the radiators don't even heat up.

I can't even find the boiler in our flat to see if it needs started, it might be in the flat below us, but you would think each flat would have their own boiler.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

  1. The best thing to do is get with the property manager. Tell them your story. If you have a condo you probably have a home owners association that pays a management co. If renting then:

Because your a new tenants there you need to know all the dos and don't of your property.

Some things are your responsibility and others are the management company's. because it is a multi-family building, it may have any number of possibilities as to how it is piped and locations for boiler or boilers. You need the      (go to for first names) for your property troubles. IE:

    (1) Property Manager ..Phone...cell

    (2) Maintenance Superintendent Phone ..cell

    (3) Assistant Super Phone...cell

    Then your gas provider number

Also find the friendliest neighbor who knows the ropes. you'll get the (honey this is the way it is answers) and sometimes they are the best.

As far as the gas being on.. you may be told it is  on by automated info. and You know how those are.

    Good luck

  2. First things first, the landlord has to,by law have all gas appliances tested and commissioned when ever a tenant moves into a new property.Phone him and tell him that you are aware of this fact and request he sends an engineer to carry out any checks or work that may be required. He should be the one to fire up the boiler for you.

If you dont have any luck with the landlord then you can try and fire up the boiler yourself. If there is a gas fire, then it's possible that you have a back boiler behind it.Have a look under the fire, there will be a removable plate/cover to get access to the pilot light, the instructions should be on the plate. If it's not a back boiler,go out side and look for the flue terminal to find the boilers location.

  3. Ring the landlord up straight away. He or his agent should come round and show you how it works.

  4. call in a gas engineer

  5. Sounds like an airlock.

You'll need a plumber to sort this one out I'm afraid

  6. try bleeding first even if the pipes are cold the air could be all the way down the line be careful when bleeding do not unscrew nut all the way be patient bleed at least once every few weeks, ask the people below you if they have heat most flats are connected to one large boiler that tenates do not have access to some boilers are turned off in rentals until fall so that could also be your problem most rentals also bleed it is safer to let them if you do not know what you are doing you could be liabel if you cause damage

  7. simple things first.. turn up the thermostat .. open the valves on individual radiators .. find the boiler.. make sure it is switched on.. charge the system if necessary.. check firing up .. if heat ok / no heat .. call landlord / heating engineer

  8. If you are sure the gas is on, the pilot is lit and it is actually heating the boiler, you need to bleed the air out of all the radiators hooked to that boiler.

Depending on the age and condition of the system, hopefully bleeding the air out is all you need. Good luck!

  9. Search around in all the cupboards and under the kitchen sink for a boiler. As a last resort, phone the agents and ask where it is. As you have just moved in, the isolation electric switch for the boiler is most probably turned off while the place was empty. Just put the switch on and you should be okay. The switch you want has a red neon light on it.

  10. There could be an out building or the boiler might be in the loft, but your landlord or his agent should sort that out for you, other than that if you have bought the flat then call a plumber and have him sort for you, if the property as been stood a while it could have been drained or it might be a combi boiler that as lost pressure and wont light, you must locate the heat source.

  11. You don't say if the flat is your own or rented, if it is rented contact your landlord and get him/her to sort out the problem, otherwise its advisable to call in a plumber or gas engineer rather than try and cure the problem yourself.
