Despite surpassing the studio’s expectations the game’s developer, Quantic Dream stated that they are unhappy with pretty much everything about Heavy Rain. There’s just no pleasing some people.
Quantic Dream is a studio known for doing things differently and anyone who has played Heavy Rain will know that for a fact. Less of a video game and more of an interactive drama, Heavy Rain was an experience to behold as the four main characters of the
game could die at any point and instead of being shown a loading screen and the game starting at a previous checkpoint, the story would continue without the deceased character.
This made replaying the game an experience in of itself. Critics praised the revolutionary game and fans loved it as well. In fact, the game sold an impressive 2-million copies worldwide and is still the only triple-A title in its genre.
However, David Cage, the main man at Quantic Dreams, claims that the studio is unhappy about the 2010 title, claiming it could have been so much better.
He stated that he was “unhappy with everything” and that the game “could have done a better job in all areas, and have better rendering, and better visuals, and better gameplay, and better everything.”
While some may consider that harsh assessment they need to understand the context in which this was said. Quantic Dream is set to announce two new titles at this year’s E3 Sony Press Conference and it is not uncommon for a developer to slate their previous
title as they build up to how much better their latest title is going to be.
However, it must also be taken into consideration that the next game by Quantic Dream has been built on a completely new engine and was developed using very different technology as well, so compared to what everyone is about to see Heavy Rain may end up
looking rather disappointing.
The studio recently showed off its latest tech with the ‘Kara’ demo, which pretty much blew audiences away, and one can expect Quantic Dream to try and top that come E3 next month.
