  1. no. what is heavy metal anyway, real fast music with screams? no one really cares outside of the youngsters who buy it.

subwoofer/attention seekers however, are viewed as evil lawbreakers.

  2. You have to go back to its beginning - when I was a kid (the late '60's and early '70's) - Steppenwolf; Black Sabbath; etc.

It has nothing to do with satanism; it had/has everything to do with rebelling against adults and what was considered "good" or "normal" or whatever  - you KNOW - teenagers and young adults rebelling; the human anthem

  3. Satanism?  Hardly... more like irrational fear of "Satan" by religious people... most metal music doesn't make overt references to Satan, unless it is purely for shock value.

Music, and society's response to it, are entirely formed within the framework of a culture.  There is nothing inherently good or bad about it, only how it is perceived by people who exist also within that framework.

This question could have been asked in the 1930s as "What effect does Jazz music have on society?  Is the Devil in that music?"  Answer is NO.  It could've been asked in the 1400s as "What effect does instrumental music have on society?  Does it cause people to lose focus on the Church?"  The answer is no.

Outside of the immediate framework imposed by a culture, music is entirely benign -- which is why Charlie Parker sounds so great instead of evil to modern ears and Beethoven doesn't sound revolutionary at all to most listeners.
