Heavy rain greets sailors as Jerry Wales retains lead on Day 3 of RS700 National Championships
Queen Mary Sailing Club’s Jerry Wales retained his lead on the rainy third day of RS700 National Championship at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy. The sailors were greeted by heavy rains at Weymouth and they had to wait for the conditions
to improve. However, Wales set a superb sail on Day 3 to finish on top of the standings.
As the wind started building around the racing area after the rain stopped, the sailors began to steer their boats on Weymouth and Portland waters. Stuart Riches cleared the fleet from the start of the first race but he couldn’t manage his lead in the first
of four scheduled races, allowing Junis Rindermann to replace him ahead of Jon Heissig.
The fleet split again in race two, featuring Wales in the lead who met Steve Powell, Tony Dencher and Stuart Riches at the windward mark. He sailed easily to the finish line and was followed by Tony Dencher. The third race was more exciting which saw Dencher
taking early lead and finishing in top place ahead of Wales who crossed the finish line on second place.
The breeze fell in the fourth race but it didn’t affect the sail as Wales led the fleet again with superb sailing techniques and stood first in the race to retain his overall lead with 11 points. His club mate, Stephen Powell is currently on second place
in the standings with a 14 point difference at 25.
