Hedge planting?

What is the best way to go about planting a hedge?

Dig holes? or Trench?

The hedge will be about 550ft long. Will also be planting 3gal. container shrubs.

  1. for that length I will use the trench,then water it,when the water go down..... then place the shrubs about 1 ft apart,cause you have to give it place to grow and branch....then plop back the soil back in ,water and you good to go...good luck with this back breaker,...


  2. I'd do trench if I had a trencher.  The thought of 170 or so holes, even with a post hole digger, tires me out.  Also you need to worry about compaction from tromping all over the soil as you dig holes.  At least with a trencher you have turned some of the soil, oxygenating the ground.  

    Of course use a string and stakes or laser line to keep the hedge row straight.  How will you irrigate??

  3. If you have acces to a mini digger then trench it. Otherwise get the spade out. Depending on spread of shrubs plant 2' - 3' apart. Feed hole well with bonemeal etc.
