Question:

Hedgehog as a pet?

I'm considering getting a pet hedgehog, but I don't know much about them, I've done some minimal research, but I'd like to know from some owners what their like as pets

Just to give you an idea I've owned/cared for rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, gold/beta fish, dogs, cats, and budgies... so I've got experience caring for pets, but not any that need live food (which I read on one site that hedgehogs need, is that true?)

  1. they are prickly... and cute

  2. no u can feed hedgehogs pellets and they r great pets

  3. Hedgehogs make great pets. Keep up doing the research and be prepared for what you are getting into. Hedgehogs are low maintenance pets, but still require a caregiver with substantial knowledge of their care. First off, I would focus on creating a good set up for them. Get the biggest cage you can. I would recommend a C&C cage (see the link below). Make sure that you can find everything you need for your pet before you bring them home. Preparedness is everything.

Hedgehogs eat a staple diet of high quality/low fat cat food. Try to find Wellness, Royal Canin, Eagle Pac, Blue Buffalo, Chicken Soup for the Cat Lovers Soul, etc... Meat MUST be  at least 2 out of the first 3 ingredients. Look for around 20% protein and less than 10% fat. Their meals are supplemented with 3 or 4 mealworms per week, cooked chicken, vegetables, cottage cheese and wet cat food as a treat now and then. I haven't ever given any of mine live food. I usually buy the freeze dried mealworms and/or crickets. You can also raise your own, in which case you can drop the insect into hot water before you feed it to your hedgehog. There are many places online that will show you how to raise your own mealies.

    Good luck!
