  1. this shouldn't be a factor children at an early age have great success learning a second language you will probably see increases in all these areas as opposed to delays.

  2. In my preschool class last year I had a little boy from South Korea in my class. He was 4 year old and barely spoke English. Neither did his parents. Our class was for 2 1/2 hours. We started with free play for about 30 min and followed with 10-15 min group time for calendar, weather and stories. This little boy would follow what the other kids were doing but you really had to work to get his attention during group time. He didn't know what I was saying and he would just start looking around the room and then sometimes would get up and just go play. I physically had to go over to him and lead him back to our group time. It's very difficult to guage his ability to learn when you have a language barrier. Also, very hard to manage this when the parents do not speak the same language as you as well. The other children rarely played with him because they didn't understand what he was saying. Honestly, you will never know how he doing developmentally - you will have a limited amount of info to go on because all you can really do is observe his actions and not his cognitive abilities.
