The Eredivisie side’s Europa League hopes have been dented following a defeat against the Norwegian club in the first-leg of the play-off round, and Marco van Basten bemoans his side’s poor display.
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Molde-FK-c39935 cruised to a comfortable 2-0 win over Heerenveen in the first-leg of UEFA Europa League play-off round at Molde Stadion on Thursday, August 23.
The Friesland outfit head coach, Marco van Basten, was extremely disappointed with his side’s poor display away from home. The Dutchman stressed that his troops made too many mistakes on the pitch.
“I am very disappointed. Against a team like Molde, we did not have to lose in this manner. But things like these happen in football. Unfortunately, we made too many mistakes in this game, and Molde took full advantage of it”, Van Basten was quoted as saying
to Voetbal International.
The Eredivisie side managed to create few openings, testing the home side goalkeeper, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Espen-Bugge-Pettersen-c12893, on six occasions. However, they failed to find the back of the net.
The former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Netherlands-c753 boss insisted that his side lacked incisiveness upfront, and admitted that it was the main difference between the two clubs.
“We had few opportunities, but we failed to finish. If you have a chance, you must take it. That was the main difference between us and Molde”, Van Basten added.
Following the departures of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/PSV-c40281 Eindhoven, Heerenveen have clearly been lacking firepower upfront.
Van Basten admitted that his side will now have to play against a very defensive-minded side in the return leg of the play-offs round in front of their home crowd, but expressed optimism that they will manage to progress through to the next phase of the
competition.
“They will now play very defensively. We were insufficient to impose our game at Molde Stadion. But it is not over yet. We will try to claim victory in Heerenveen, and make progression to the group stages”, the Dutch mentor concluded.
Heerenveen will lock horns against Molde in the return leg at Abe Lenstra Stadion on August 30.
