The 20-year-old had an ongoing contract that was due to expire at the end of the ongoing 2011/12 campaign. However, his contract had a clause through which the Friesland outfit could extend his deal for further two years.
The central defender had been linked with a move to join Ajax Amsterdam or http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/FC-Twente-c39233 Enschede on a free transfer this summer. However, the Friesland outfit have now ruled out the possibility of the youngster leaving on a Bosman move.
Gouweleeuw started his professional career at Abe Lenstra Stadion in the summer of 2010. He made only six Eredivisie appearances in his debut season. However, the 20-year-old has been performing impressively since the start of the 2011/12 campaign.
He has thus far netted two goals while setting up three more in 18 appearances this term. His consistent performances at the back rewarded him with an extension to his ongoing contract.
A statement on the club's official website stated:
“The option in the contract of Jeffrey Gouweleeuw has been exercised by Heerenveen. This means that the defender will remain under contract until the summer of 2014”.
Heerenveen are currently occupying the third spot in the league table, trailing the Eredivisie table-toppers, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/PSV-c40281 Eindhoven, by a mere two points. Needless to say, the outfit from Friesland’s back-line has played an integral role in their impressive performances
thus far in the league.
