Heikki Kovalainen feels quite confident that he would win the championship if he had a car, competent enough of doing so.
Kovalainen started his F1 career with the Renault team and had been at McLaren as Lewis Hamilton’s teammate who won the championship in the 2008 season while he could only be able to win one race at the 2008 Hungarian GP.
In the forthcoming season, Kovalainen is making his entrance in his sixth season in F1 and third with Caterham.
Kovalainen was the fifth fastest driver with his best lap time of 1 minute 23.828 seconds after the completion of 104 laps on the second day of the final test held at Circuit de Catalunya, Barcelona.
Moreover, on the third day of the final test, Kovalainen said that there was a lot of pace yet to come from the car after he admitted that the best lap time on Friday last week was set on low fuel.
When asked about his victory in the upcoming season with a front-running car, Kovalainen expressed that it was 100% possible.
“It's possible, yeah, it's possible,” he said. “But at the moment I haven't set any long term goals for myself and actually I don't have a contract until after this year with anyone, I want to keep my options open. If I see that this team is progressing
like I think it should I think I'm happy to stay here. There are many things that I've been able to achieve in this team that I didn't achieve in the previous teams and that are working very well.”
However, he said that now most of his focus was on his performance in the upcoming season which he was taking extremely seriously.
Moreover, he said that during the start of the season he and the team would definitely sit down in order to share their views regarding the significant preparations for the forthcoming season and making the necessary steps to improve the position of the
team in the championship.
In addition, he said that he was indeed a driver who is eager for the success and said that he could manage to perform even better if he would be provided with the capable car. Nevertheless, he also said that too much discussion on this matter is pointless.
