Heikki Kovalainen intends to stay with Caterham – Formula 1 news
Heikki Kovalainen says that he intends to stay in Caterham and wants to extend his contract with the team if it keeps on stepping forward.
In 2010, when Caterham was known as Lotus Racing, Kovalainen joined the team after his spell with McLaren as Lewis Hamilton’s teammate. Caterham achieved the best results amongst the three new teams in 2010 F1 season.
Kovalainen said that changing teams is not that simple. Furthermore, he said that he has been with Caterham since its beginning and has developed a very good relationship with the team where he knows everyone quite well and he is familiar about the functioning
of the team.
“Overall, these two years, and hopefully this year as well, have been a really great time for my career, in rebuilding and finding form again and I'm grateful to Caterham and everyone in the team for that. At the moment though, I think the focus for me has
to be developing this car and finding the right set-up directions for it, so we can get the results we are targeting. The future, beyond that, can wait. So, for people who want to speculate, it's not the right time to be talking about it and I'm not discussing
anything with anyone!” said Kovalainen.
Moreover, Kovalainen expressed that his focus is entirely on Caterham at the time and he said that if the team keeps on making progress in the third year, he will remain in the team for a longer period of time.
After having a new deal with IMG, an organisation which manages sports personalities, Kovalainen asserted that he expects the deal will help him in the forthcoming F1 season staring in Melbourne, Australia.
Moreover, he said that he wanted to spend more time with the team and the deal with IMG will surely help him in this regard.
Kovalainen added that IMG will prove out to be a good option for him and will assist him in performing well during the upcoming season by increasing his focus on the races as it has more knowledge and expertise about what comes about to an F1 driver outside
the cockpit.
