Heikki Kovalainen refuses to allow speculations over his future – Formula 1 news
Heikki Kovalainen has refused to allow any speculation over his future in Formula 1.
Kovalainen has said that he does not want to be distracted by such speculations in the current season.
The Finn is a potential for a few rival teams for the 2013 season as the Caterham driver has impressed during his two and a half seasons with the team.
Kovalainen was with McLaren prior to racing with Caterham and struggled in his two years with the British based team. The driver has gained interest from Ferrari and Sauber.
The Finn himself has played down any such speculations and deals to move away from Caterham. He said that he believes that his performances behind the wheel will do all the talking for him when the times come to make deals for 2013 contracts.
“What I'm focusing on is that I keep my performances as high as possible and aim to take the maximum from the car and the team,” said Kovalainen. “That would put me in the best position in case Caterham has other plans for the future. I'll try to show everyone,
including my team, that I have what it takes to get the job done.”
Kovalainen has not been able to score a point since the 2009 Singapore GP but the Finn is still confident that he has put enough in the sport to impress the right people.
“We haven't seriously talked to anyone so I don't know what they think,” he said when asked how easy it was to impress team bosses in uncompetitive machinery. “But the team bosses ranked me ninth in their top 10 list, which was very good and shows that they
are paying attention.”
The Finn has also admitted that there have not been any official talks between him and his current employer Caterham for 2013, but revealed that such talks will start soon. He the team will need to convince him that they will be fighting for better positions
in the coming season if he were to stay with the team for another year.
It will be interesting to see who Kovalainen goes for as his future gets decided in the coming days.
