Heikki Kovalainen says Caterham needs to show better results to retain him for 2013 – Formula 1 news
Heikki Kovalainen has said that Caterham will need to start to come up with better performances in the season in order to keep him with the team at end of his contract expiration.
Kovalainen’s contract ends with the team at the end of the 2012 season and the Finn had hoped that the team would be able to move into the midfields in the current season but it has been a terrible season for the team as it is placed at 10th in the Constructors
Championship.
Caterham has not been able to score any points in the season. It is not entirely the team’s fault the season has been very competitive and also unpredictable. Teams like Williams and Sauber have excelled in the season. Other struggling teams include Force
India and Toro Rosso. These teams have also failed to make an impact in the season because of the level of competitiveness in the season.
Kovalainen said that he needs to see some progress in the near future because at the moment the team is not where it needs to be.
“I don't know what the future holds for me, perhaps my current team doesn't even want me anymore... I let my results do the talking, and up to now they seem fairly good to me. That's the best way to present myself,” he said.
“I still have plenty of racing in my blood. I feel I haven't given everything yet, also because things didn't go well at McLaren and I still need to demonstrate something. I'm not even interested in what position I am, what's important is that there are
people realising I can do better than 16th or 17th,” he added.
He added that money is the one thing that he is least interested in. He believes that a driver needs to find a good team and that team can be Caterham or any other and he feels that he can do that at this stage of his career.
The coming races are at Hockenheim and Budapest. It will be interesting to see how Caterham fares and whether Kovalainen finds the results he desires to stick with the team at the end of his contractual agreement.
