Heikki Kovalainen says he is keeping his options open for 2013 race seat – Formula 1 news
Heikki Kovalainen of team Caterham believes that he is ready to drive for some strong team and to earn some points.
He said that his first priority is to maximise performance over the circuit and to give his best to Caterham.
Kovalainen told the German website motorsport-total.com, “My focus is on maximising my performance here at Caterham and giving my best to the team.”
Furthermore, he said that his enthusiasm about his career makes him favourable to race for any team. He added that he is unsure about the future plans of Caterham. He thinks that they do not want him in the team anymore.
“That puts me in the best possible position in the market if I want to move teams. But I don’t even know what Caterham’s plans are — maybe they don’t want me anymore,” he added.
He added that the reports of him joining Sauber are just rumours as he has not yet received any offer from them or any advancement towards the contract.
Moreover, he said that he can only praise the strong performance of Sauber until now and cannot say anything else.
“It’s rumours and that’s all I can say. They (Sauber) seem to be very strong this year but that’s all I can say,” he said.
Telling about his experience with McLaren, he said that it was as if his dream had come true. He added that McLaren is a great team and so is Ferrari, but Fernando Alonso is doing great and Massa is improving with the passage of time.
Looking towards his expected contract, the Finnish driver said that he had both good and bad times at McLaren but he can only mention his good times. He added that he has a good relationship with Martin Whitmarsh, principal of team McLaren and he is comfortable
in joining the team.
The Finnish driver said, “I can only say good things about them, although I experienced some good times and some bad times.”
Moreover, he said that he knows what has happened in past and what will happen in future if he joins the team but there were some particular reasons and he has come a long way since then.
